The overall appearance of the gallery and artwork has been greatly enhanced, while total lighting energy use of the Gallery was slashed from 3,000 watts to only 320 watts!

Gallery One Twenty One Before and After
Before: halogen lighting with excessive glare, spill, and heat generation. Three 75 watt Par30 halogen spotlights are in use in this photo.

Halogen lights emit harmful UV rays which cause undue artwork damage due to premature color fading.

After: Lumicrest LED lighting keeps the light cleanly and gently focused on the artwork. Colors and apparent depth are subtly enhanced.

Three Lumicrest 10 watt Par30s have replaced the three 75 watt halogen Par30 lights in this part of the gallery. No harmful UV light is emitted.

Mary-Lou is an accomplished artist and the Treasurer of Gallery One Twenty One. As an artist, she loves the improved lighting for the gallery - and as the Treasurer, she's sold on the energy savings!

In the month before the LED lights were installed, the power bill for the gallery was $43.62. After conversion, the power bill dropped to $7.65, for an 82% energy cost saving!

Mary-Lou says:

"I love the softness of the LED lighting that allows me to look at the artwork, not at a glaring light spot on the painting or the walls around it.

My sensitivity to the variations of colour, tone and intensity seems to be enhanced by this lighting. Also, I seem to be aware of a greater sense of depth in both paintings and sculpture.

The contours of sculpture are much more subtle and visually explorable compared to the jarring barrier-forming highlights that the halogen floodlights and spotlights created.

The long term financial benefits, in both reduced electricity bills and cost of frequent replacement of halogen bulbs, outweigh the start-up costs of converting to LED gallery lighting.

LED lighting in a fine art gallery provides the viewer with a quiet opportunity to really see the artwork in all its aspects."
